Just so you know you are not on some faceless, corporate, drinks brand website, I want to tell you what this ORIGINALS SPICED GIN is all about.
My name is Jay Byers. This is me in my STEEL RIVER DISTILLERY.
I am the founder of this distillery, this drinks company, whose website you are on; STEEL RIVER DRINKS.
I started this business with the last tenner to my name back in 2018.
18 months before that I was sleeping in my car (and it was a FIAT 500, so it wasn’t a very big car too!).
Such were the depths that my life had sunken.
I was newly single after 15 years, no job, no house and no future so I thought at the time.
Very dark times indeed. I leave you to fill in the blanks.
Through a process of self healing, learning, reading, evaluation and getting stronger mentally, I managed to get to a point where I had an idea to put my region (Teesside) on the UK drinks map: By starting a company called STEEL RIVER DRINKS.
I didn’t have much money, but I did have a dream and a purpose and a mission.
I was very fortunate to have a few great mentors, advisors and a handful of great people who believed in me.
Together, they got me to the next stage of actually being able to launch my first Steel River Drink product.
I had a 20L still, was working out of the kitchen of a house and barely had the funds to buy the first bottles, labels, tops, wax and crucially; those now famous Ginflasks.
By the time of launch I had £10 in the bank and I just thought if I could sell 200 bottles it would be another step on the road of my recovery, my redemption. And I would hopefully not fall flat on my face and end up owing money out and failing…again at life.
On April 30th 2018 I launched STAINSBY GIRL GIN. My love song to Teesside.
A blue, colour changing wonder. An off dry gin infused with the fruit of prickly pear cactus.
WE HAVE NOW SOLD OVER 20,000 BOTTLES.
It is now an iconic drink up in these parts.
And along with that I have launched multiple gins and vodkas, as well as create innovation and value to 1000s of customers.

We now have a 4000sqft unit in Stockton on Tees, with stills, fermenters, casks, bottling facilities, as well as a bar and a store.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR SUCCESS HAS ENABLED ME TO GIVE BACK TO MY COMMUNITY.
I SAY ALL OF THIS NOT TO SHOW OFF, BUT HOPEFULLY TO PROVE TO YOU THAT YOU INVESTING IN THIS BOTTLE IS WELL PLACED.
I HAVE DELIVERED AND WILL CONTINUE TO DELIVER.
Because, just as I am passionate about my region, STEEL RIVER has a passionate set of supporters too, YOU included hopefully.
And we all just want to kick on to the next stage of our journey.
AND THAT IS MAKING RUM & WHISKY.
THAT PUTS US IN ANOTHER LEAGUE.
THAT CONTINUES THIS AMAZING JOURNEY.
THAT PUTS OUR REGION ON THE UK DRINKS MAP.
